All computer musicians/music producers and anyone that has an interest in computers and music (together!) should go on and check this link out!  A few months ago IK Multimedia had a promotion on where you could buy an Xpansion Pack for Sample Tank and get one free.  This went up to 6 packs for the price of one!  When you brought your first pack you received Sample Tank free which was a fully featured version of Sample Tank 2.5 with a 500mb selected sample library.  You could add to this with sounds and samples from the powered by sample tank line and all the other Xpansion packs and samples/loops from your own library.  After the promotion ended so did the Sample Tank free.  But as of Thursday 14/10/2010 IK Multimedia brought Sample Tank free back with its 500mb libary!!!!  Hit the title of this blog to head on over to IK Multimedia’s website and get your copy of Sample Tank free, well it is free and sounds awesome!  I have a free mp3 download up on SoundCloud and some of the sounds in this track where from Sample Tank free and the Xpansion Packs, check it out!

Producers, samples, loops and presets!

Last weekend I was reading my latest issue of Computer Music mag that had just arrived.  There was a letter titled Rant, it got me thinking.  This is his letter:

I’m a musician with ten years’ experience of writing songs with just me and my guitar.  Recently, I’ve taken the leap into the world of IDM and House music.  I love the engery I get from this - it’s similer to what metal used to do for me.

I do find house one of the most unoriginal genres, though, to the point that some artists don’t even try - which is a kick in the nads for the guys who are making good tunes worthy of ‘Club Classic’ branding.

I try my best to be original in any way, shap or form, and I find it shocking how people are openly using loops to create songs and branding them their own ‘hot new track’.

I think the idea of using presets is an awesome way to get started, but these guys-who throw a track together using their new ‘Classic House’ sample CD and using presets in Massive - are just a joke.  If you wanna produce, then produce - even replicate a sound to recreate your own version.  Have some dignity, try your best and don’t take the most rewarding part out of this art - I’m finding it hard to even to call it that sometimes.  These people are are as bad as the local club’s laptop DJ!  Yeah, that’s right mate, turn the volume down at the end of every fourth bar.  Bravo!

First letter to really get me thinking, so I wrote back into the mag in reply.  This is what I wrote:

have just received my copy of Computer Music (CM157) and have been having a good read of the issue and the messages titled Rant in the inbox got me thinking this month.

I personally don’t see the problem in using loops and samples.  We are all here and producing music because we love music.  Even using samples and loops you are producing a unique track that other people would not have made because they are not you and there is nothing wrong with this as long as you are making it your own track.  Samples and loops help creativity and work flow, you could spend hours, even days (more possibly) trying to create some sounds of your own that just don’t work, but on the flip side you might hear a loop and it gives you a sudden inspiration for a new track or you might have a whole track that is just missing that something… enter the sample library!   You still as a producer need to bring people through the track, the rises and drop offs, the break downs etc..  Samples and loops don’t do this for you, you as a producer have to have the skills to do this, writing a great track.  Yes it makes it easier to put a coherent track together but 6min of the same loops repeating itself wont interest anyone.  So these producers that use loops and samples in their productions will have parts of themselves in it in the fact that they have made a great track, how they have arranged it, effects they have used and style they write in etc…. And if they have used a preset in a synth, they have still got to write a great synth line which would be no different to say someone picking up a guitar and writing a great riff.  And seen as we are all producing music because we love it, we should be giving credit where credit is due when a great track is made, no matter where the building blocks have come from.

Just though I would share that with you all!

Hey all, thanks for checking in!

During a recent series of cloudy days, team SoundCloud has been mega busy working on short-term improvements on heavy-trafficked pages such as the Stats and the Dashboard.

In a significant step toward an AIDS vaccine, U.S. government scientists have discovered three powerful antibodies, the strongest of which neutralizes 91% of HIV strains, more than any AIDS antibody yet discovered.

Looking closely at the strongest antibody, they have detailed exactly what part of the virus it targets and how it attacks that site.

The antibodies were discovered in the cells of a 60-year-old African-American gay man, known in the scientific literature as Donor 45, whose body made the antibodies naturally. Researchers screened 25 million of his cells to find 12 that produced the antibodies. Now the trick will be for scientists to develop a vaccine or other methods to make anyone’s body produce them.

Holy shit.
